Radar2 is a cutting-edge Android application designed specifically for pilots navigating ultralight or microlight aircraft, as well as general aviation aircraft in uncontrolled airspace. The primary purpose of the app is to enhance flight safety by providing pilots with critical real-time information about the positions and movements of nearby aircraft utilizing the same system or compatible technologies.
As pilots navigate, the system serves as an indispensable tool, offering an in-flight collision avoidance system (ACAS) with prompt voice alerts to signal impending dangers, which notably remains operational even while other apps are in use. This proactive safety feature significantly bolsters visual flight rules (VFR) safety measures, providing an extra layer of security during the journey.
One of the top features includes its seamless integration with the GPS and internet connectivity (3G, 4G, or 5G) of an Android device, allowing it to exchange position data with other aircraft. It connects to the expansive Open Glider Network (OGN), extending its functionality to include compatible systems such as FLARM and OGN Trackers. Moreover, the system can receive data from commercial aircraft equipped with ADS-B technology, provided they are at a suitable altitude for its operation.
The game offers the flexibility of anonymous usage, although registering with an ICAO or OGN hexadecimal code is possible through the OGN platform. This registration process enhances the reliability of the transmitted data within the network.
Prior to lift-off, it's crucial to initialize the software a few minutes before departure to ensure GPS reception is steady and current local weather data is captured. Doing so not only maximizes performance but also enables a flight to be tracked on authorized remote devices and terminals, amplifying visibility and safety.
Radar2 is currently undergoing preliminary distribution and is accessible free of charge to interested pilots. To gain access, simply request the password via email. Feedback is highly encouraged, with the request that any encountered bugs or suggestions be reported with specific details concerning the smartphone and aircraft type for continual improvement. Before operation, it is mandatory to read and accept the "Terms and Conditions" along with the "Instructions for Use," ensuring pilots are informed and compliant with operating guidelines.
